Discovering History and Beauty: Exploring Fort McAllister's Fascinating Past and Scenic Landscapes

Nestled along the banks of the Ogeechee River in Richmond Hill, Georgia, Fort McAllister stands as a testament to our state’s rich history. A Civil War stronghold and a historic landmark, efforts to restore the fort began in the 1930s by automobile magnate, Henry Ford, and in 1958 it became a state park.

Today you can see history up close. The gun emplacements, earthen walls, and an onsite museum provide insight into the fort’s history and times. Living history programs feature reenactors demonstrating the challenges soldiers and residents faced during the war. But wait - it’s not all about the history! Fort McAllister State Park offers plenty of outdoor fun for the whole family.

Stroll around the park, then have a picnic at one of the many areas featuring tables and grills. Enjoy the view of the river over hotdogs and hamburgers. In the afternoon, put on your hiking boots and hit the nature trails. The Redbird Creek Trail and the Magnolia Trail are popular options.

If you enjoy fishing, drop your line into the Ogeechee River. Bass, crappie, and catfish are in abundance and they are hungry. Your up-to-date Georgia fishing license gives you access to the waters. Perhaps, though, you are more of a kayaker or canoeist. Paddle along the river and watch for wildlife, such as turtles, a variety of birds, and maybe even an alligator! If you are a serious birder, the park is a haven for egrets, herons, osprey, songbirds, and many others.

The park offers inviting campsites for both tents and RVs. The campsites are equipped with water, electricity, and many with full hookups. Since you are staying longer, why not engage in geocaching? Your smartphone will lead you to hidden treasures throughout the park. It makes exploring Fort McAllister even more fun.

Not much of a camper? Rent one of the park’s seven cottages. Spend the night and rent a paddle boat early in the morning for a gentle tour on the river. Other amenities include a boat ramp, playground, fishing pier, and a group shelter that seats up to 150 people (reservation required).

The park is at 3894 Fort McAllister Rd., Richmond Hill, GA 31324. The gift shop is a “must stop” and Wi-Fi is available in the park and museum. For reservations, call 800-864-7275. General questions? Phone 912-727-2339.
