End Summer with a Splash
Tybee Island is our closest Atlantic Ocean beach for folks in Savannah and Richmond Hill. Here on the Ogeechee River, you can access fresh water and navigate saltwater adventures:
The Bryan County Fisherman’s Co-Op is now open and free to the public after months of work to improve one of our favorite fishing spots! Now fishermen have boat trailer access parking, four-lane concrete boat ramps, floating docks, fishing boardwalk, waterfront pavilion, and several picnic tables. Phase two of the project will enhance the walking trails and more amenities as improvements continue.
Fort McAllister State Historic Park’s fishing dock makes it fun and easy to throw a line and reel in trout and flounder at the Ogeechee River Pier (daytime or camping park pass must be purchased). The campground’s dock also provides access to the Ogeechee and is reserved only for campers. The park offers canoe rentals dependent on local weather and water conditions.
Fishing charters – inshore and offshore – are a wonderful way to make memories with family and friends. Head to Fort McAllister Marina for your daylong fishing trip with Captain David Newlin. He’s been guiding fishing trips since 1979. Net your shrimp, other shellfish, and fresh-caught snapper, mahi-mahi, and wahoo! Fort McAllister Marina is Richmond Hill's only full-service marina, able to accommodate yachts up to 100 feet as well as your everyday runabouts.
FoReel Private Charters provides sunset cruises, river cruises, boat rides and historic tours. Ask about going to the uncrowded waters of St. Catherines and Ossabaw islands where you can fish for trout, redfish, sheepshead and flounder.
Did you know? If you’re coming in for the day at Fort McAllister Marina, head to Fish Tales restaurant with your fresh catch and the chef will cook your filets, blackened or fried, and serve them to you on the patio with fries, hushpuppies and coleslaw.
Even your furry friends need a splash, so head over to Bryan County Bark Park. It’s the Richmond Hill off-leash dog park with a body of water for romping and splashing.
Sterling Creek Park offers warm sand and cool water. Bring your chairs and picnics as the lake is the ideal place for swimming, sunbathing and making summer memories. Sterling Creek Park is a 187-acre recreational park where everyone is welcome to swim, kayak, canoe, paddleboard, fish, hike and bike on trails. Note that the park was closed in early summer for maintenance, so check the website as you plan your visit.
The City of Richmond Hill has announced that 51 acres have been set aside near Town Centre Drive to bring an aquatic complex to life, funded and operated by the YMCA of Coastal Georgia and the Georgia Coastal Aquatic team. Stay tuned for this exciting news as you plan your next season’s trip to Richmond Hill.
Don’t let summer go by without a Richmond Hill splash! Keep coming back as there is always more to explore ‘On the Hill’.
